GW2 BUILD TEMPLATES VS EQUIPMENT TEMPLATES
Sources checked 14 October 2026
Copied a Guild Wars 2 build but your character still has the wrong gear? Start by checking which template you changed. Skills, equipment and appearance are managed separately. This guide explains which panel to use and how to check a copied setup before you spend gold.
What does each template save?
- Build Template: your character’s skills, specializations and trait choices.
- Equipment Template: a gear loadout. The same item can be used in more than one equipment template, and equipped template items free up inventory space.
- Build Storage: an account-wide library of builds that characters can reference and copy. It is not a store of equipment.
You will find Build Templates under Build in the Hero panel, and Equipment Templates under Equipment. Keep the two names distinct when following a guide. ArenaNet’s explanation of builds, storage and equipment.
How to import a GW2 build code
- Save the build you currently use before replacing it. Copy its code into a note, or keep a copy in Build Storage.
- Copy the new build code from the guide. Open the Hero panel’s Build section on a character of the matching profession.
- Right-click the intended build tab and choose Paste Build Template. This replaces that tab’s skill and trait setup.
- Compare the imported choices with the guide. Importing a code does not grant missing unlocks. Locked choices can remain stored in the template and become available when you unlock them; check which skills and traits your character can actually use.
A build code does not import equipment. Equipment templates cannot be shared as build chat codes. Check your weapons and gear separately. GW2 Wiki: build templates and sharing.
Copied a build but something looks wrong?
- Your weapons or stats did not change: a build code changes skills and traits, not your equipment. Compare the Equipment panel with the guide.
- A skill or specialization is unavailable: check the required unlocks on this character before spending gold on gear.
- Your character looks different: cosmetic choices belong in Fashion Templates; appearance does not confirm that the combat setup matches.
A practical checklist before playing
- Confirm the guide’s intended mode and role before investing in equipment.
- Compare the selected traits and skills with the written guide.
- Check the actual items you have equipped against its gear list.
- Name your tabs clearly, such as the activity and role they are intended for.
- Make one deliberate change at a time, then check that you selected the intended setup.

How legendary equipment fits in
The Legendary Armory makes unlocked legendary equipment available to eligible level-80 characters on your account. An item must still be usable by that character’s profession and specialization. You can configure different stats and upgrades when using legendary gear in different equipment templates. This is equipment management; it does not replace the skill and trait choices in a Build Template. ArenaNet: Legendary Armory.

Where do skins and dyes belong?
Fashion Templates save cosmetic combinations. In the Hero panel, open Fashion, then Wardrobe, to work with those looks. ArenaNet introduced this system in February 2026, so older screenshots may show a different interface. Changing appearance is a separate task from choosing a combat build. Common questions
Can I import an Elementalist code on another profession?
No. The game rejects a build template that is incompatible with your current profession.
Can I switch templates during combat?
Template switching is available out of combat. GW2 Wiki: template restrictions.
