Guild Wars 2 is ArenaNet’s online role-playing game set in Tyria. Explore a shared world, take part in dynamic events with nearby players, and use movement and dodging in combat.

The core game is free to play, with account restrictions. Expansions and some additional content require separate purchases. Check the account comparison before buying.

ArenaNet: free account features

Choose from five playable races: asura, charr, human, norn and sylvari. The nine professions are elementalist, engineer, guardian, mesmer, necromancer, ranger, revenant, thief and warrior. Access to revenant requires an expansion.

Character levels run from 1 to 80. After level 80, eligible PvE experience can train mastery tracks once the system is unlocked. Experience and mastery points are different: fill a track with experience, then spend points earned from eligible achievements and mastery insights to unlock it. Mastery access depends on expansion ownership and the track’s requirements.

PvE includes open-world events, story content, dungeons, fractals, strike missions and raids. Competitive play includes structured PvP and World vs. World. Access to specific activities can depend on your account and expansions.

ArenaNet: instanced combat

ArenaNet discontinued the native Mac client on February 18, 2021. Alternative ways to run the game depend on your Mac and the service or software used; do not assume every Mac supports the same options. Check ArenaNet’s notice for the support limitations.

The available route depends on the item. Ascended weapons and armour can be crafted, while vendors and activity rewards offer other options, including trinkets. Check the exact item’s acquisition list before spending materials or currency.

GW2 Wiki: equipment and progression tips

Reach level 80 and own the expansion associated with the elite specialization. Spend hero points in the Training tab to unlock its traits and skills, then equip it in the third specialization slot.

ArenaNet: using elite specializations

Yes. Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire are part of a wider expansion catalogue. Expansions add their own maps, stories and features; not every expansion includes the same systems. Compare the current editions and included content on the official store before choosing.

Use the in-game Looking for Group tool to find or advertise groups. Read each listing’s requirements and look for beginner-friendly or training groups when learning. You can also join the Cellofrag Discord community to talk with other viewers.

At level 80, you can choose goals such as challenging group PvE, competitive PvP or WvW, exploration and collections. You do not need to pursue every activity. Pick content you enjoy and check its account, equipment and experience requirements before joining a group.
