GW2 BEGINNER GUIDE

Reviewed 13 October 2026 · Cellofrag

Start with a small goal: learn your character, explore a nearby map and finish a story chapter. This guide gives you a route through the first steps without asking you to buy a full endgame setup.

Build a routine while leveling

In PvE, exploration, dynamic events, gathering and story progress can award experience. The Character Adventure Guide also rewards basic gameplay tasks. Try several activities instead of repeating one task simply because it looks efficient.

  1. Read your weapon skills and practise using your heal and dodge before adding more complexity.
  2. Unlock nearby waypoints and follow events you encounter while exploring.
  3. Check the Character Adventure Guide for objectives you can complete along the way.
  4. Choose your next story or map objective before spending gold on optional upgrades.

What changes at level 80?

The character level cap is 80. Available Mastery tracks provide further account progression; experience for those tracks is separate from gaining more character levels. Your next goal can be exploration, a mount unlock or learning a game mode.

Use the mount overview to compare travel options and the event timer guide to plan a group event.

Choose the activity before the build

Decide whether you want to explore alone, join PvE groups or play competitively before following a build. Ask what the setup is intended to do and which content it requires.

World versus World brings three teams into large battles for objectives. It has its own World Experience system; do not treat it as ordinary PvE leveling.

Before spending your first gold

Write down the item you actually need and compare its total cost with your next goal. The Trading Post calculator helps estimate sale proceeds after fees. It does not predict what an item will sell for.

For account, expansion and gameplay questions, read the Guild Wars 2 FAQ.
