GW2 LEGENDARY ARMOR ROUTES
Choose the legendary armor project that fits the way you play Guild Wars 2: open-world Obsidian, raid Envoy, PvP or WvW. This guide compares the four full terrestrial armor-set routes and gives you a starting plan before you spend materials.
Legendary armor has the same attribute strength as ascended armor. Its value is flexibility across builds and eligible characters, rather than a higher stat tier.
Requirements reviewed 15 October 2026 against the linked Guild Wars 2 Wiki and ArenaNet documentation. Individual legendary pieces and aquatic equipment have separate acquisition paths; see the current armor index.
Which legendary armor route should you choose?
Start with the mode you enjoy and can return to regularly. A route that looks attractive on paper is a poor fit if you dislike the activities needed to progress it.
| Route | A good fit if you prefer… | Start by checking… |
|---|---|---|
| Obsidian | Secrets of the Obscure PvE progression | Mastery, armor collections and map materials |
| Perfected Envoy | Organized raids | Envoy collections and Legendary Insights |
| PvP armor | PvP League progression | An eligible ascended precursor and league rewards |
| WvW armor | World vs World | Armor unlocks, Skirmish Claim Tickets and precursor rarity |
Your first steps on each route
Open-world PvE: Obsidian armor
This route requires Secrets of the Obscure. Check your Obsidian Armor Crafting mastery and the recipe sold by Lyhr, then inspect the Astral Ward and Oneiros-Spun skin unlocks for the armor slot you want. Progress for one slot is not permission to skip the requirements of another.
Track the chosen slot’s Arcanum collection alongside the gifts, rift essences and map materials in its recipe. For the final piece, the appropriate crafting discipline at level 500 is used in the Wizard’s Tower; Lyhr also offers assisted crafting at an extra material cost. Compare that fee before choosing assistance.
First practical goal: pick one slot and write down its missing unlocks before buying a full set’s materials. Suffused Obsidian is a later appearance upgrade, so treat it as a separate project. Check the Obsidian requirements and recipes.
Raids: Perfected Envoy armor
The Heart of Thorns raid route uses the Envoy Armor collections, Refined Envoy precursors and Legendary Insights. Completing Envoy Armor II awards a precursor set in one chosen weight; further precursors have additional crafting requirements. Do not assume the first-set route and a later set have the same material list.
Some collection progress is limited by weekly encounters. In particular, the first collection’s Gorseval component requires kills in five separate weeks. That is a prerequisite to plan around, not a promise that your entire set will be finished in five weeks.
First practical goal: inspect the Envoy collections and arrange a repeatable raid-learning schedule. Keep collection progress separate from your material budget. Check the Envoy precursor and recipe reference.
Structured PvP: choose an eligible Glorious precursor
Ardent Glorious armor is one PvP League route. Its legendary upgrade needs the corresponding ascended piece, available through the Ascended Armor League Vendor, plus the other recipe components. Several crafting ingredients require Heart of Thorns. Other Glorious variants have different unlock conditions; choose the exact variant before spending rewards.
First practical goal: check the vendor’s piece and its legendary recipe, then track the league currencies still missing. Keep the precursor intact: the standard Mystic Forge ascended stat-change recipe replaces it with a generic ascended item that cannot serve as that legendary precursor. Read the Ardent Glorious acquisition notes.
World vs World: Triumphant armor progression
For Triumphant Hero’s armor, first unlock the matching Triumphant armor skin, then check the Skirmish Supervisor’s ascended version. An exotic piece can unlock a skin but cannot be used as the legendary precursor. The upgrade also needs other components, including items requiring Heart of Thorns.
Mistforged Triumphant Hero’s is an alternative with additional unlock requirements; it is not a mandatory step between the regular Triumphant Hero’s precursor and legendary armor.
First practical goal: verify the slot, weight and rarity before spending Skirmish Claim Tickets. Avoid the standard ascended stat-change recipe on the precursor, which replaces the item. Check the Triumphant Hero’s acquisition notes.
A planning checklist before you buy
- Choose one route, weight and slot. Write the exact item name at the top of your plan. Avoid mixing the precursor for one route with gifts intended for another.
- Check access and unlocks first. Confirm the expansion, mastery, collection or vendor requirements in the linked reference and in your account.
- Separate three kinds of progress. Keep a list for unlocks, one for account-bound currencies and one for tradeable materials. Gold alone cannot replace every requirement.
- Compare the recipe with what you own. Record “required”, “owned” and “still missing” for each component. Do not count the same materials toward several unfinished projects.
- Budget the missing materials. Check current Trading Post prices, then use the Trading Post fee calculator if you plan to sell items to fund the purchase. Sale proceeds and purchase costs are different amounts.
- Choose your next play session’s goal. Make it one concrete unlock, currency target or collection step. Recheck the recipe before a major purchase or the final craft.
There is no single reliable gold cost or completion time for every player. Your existing materials, unlocked collections, chosen route and available play time change the remaining work. Use a personal checklist rather than a fixed “finish in X days” promise.
Common legendary armor questions
Can I make a full legendary armor set without raiding?
Yes. Obsidian, PvP and WvW provide alternatives to the Envoy raid set. They still have their own access, progression and material requirements; “no raids” does not mean “no preparation”.
Can my other characters use it?
The Legendary Armory makes unlocked equipment available to eligible level-80 characters on the same account. Armor weight still matters. Each character or equipment template can use its own attributes, upgrades and appearance, and changing a legendary item’s skin does not consume a Transmutation Charge. See ArenaNet’s Legendary Armory explanation.
Should I wait for legendary armor before learning a build?
You can learn and practice while working toward the project. Legendary armor is a flexibility upgrade over ascended armor, not a higher attribute tier. For switching setups, our Build Templates vs Equipment Templates guide explains why a build code does not replace your equipment.
Does the giveaway replace this armor progression?
No. This guide describes armor acquisition in the game. The giveaway is a separate community competition; its live form specifies the actual prize and conditions. Do not assume an armor set is offered.
